What is Communication Coaching?
It is an increasingly popular means of improving interpersonal skills and developing clear, confident and compelling self expression.
Why is Communication Coaching Valuable?
In his groundbreaking book Emotional Intelligence Daniel Goleman explains that much of the workforce in North America is becoming made up of “knowledge workers… people whose productivity is marked by adding value to information.” By necessity such work is complex and highly specialized. Each person is an expert in their field and yet at the same time is dependent on others for the whole system to work. Highly developed communication skills have never been more essential.
Emotional Intelligence = Communication Expertise
A solid understanding of yourself and how you see the world is absolutely necessary before you can influence others. You need to know how to manage your own emotions in order to release your critical voice and step into your power so that you can leverage your energy into effectively presenting your expertise whether on the page or stage.
Why I become a Communication Coach
Imagine you are 17 years old and you’ve barely spent any time at school. Now imagine you suddenly have to move to a small town near Khandahar, Afghanistan. Overnight your first language is no longer useful. You also need to try to get enough functional Farsi to be able to get a job in a few months. How would you do that? What skills would become essential to you? From the privileged time I spent coaching newcomer refugees one on one through the Later to Literacy program, I learned quickly that self belief, being able to connect with others and confidence in public performance are huge factors in success. Those components often trump all other factors! It was life changing for me to see how students that made small daily progress towards becoming better communicators began to see themselves differently. They literally walked differently. They were in turn seen differently by the world.
I loved working with teenagers, but I knew the public school system was not the right home for me long term. I have been lucky to have been able to transfer my love of teaching into a different format.
How I work in the Business World
I am passionate about helping women express their true potential. I specialize in helping women recognize and value their expert knowledge and experience. I offer programs that focus on copy writing (in particular business blogging) and public speaking as I believe those areas are of particular relevance and importance in today’s world.
Community
I fully believe that learning is a two way process that happens best in community. I am able to help people discover their innate potential and I LOVE to connect people to speed along the process. For these reasons, I created the Culture Link Women’s Network and the Blog Pod Success Group to provide an empowering space for women to help each other step into their best selves.
I fully believe in practicing what I preach. I spend time in my private life working with a coach of my own and several mentors and I belong to two Mastermind groups. One is a group of fellow speakers and writers; the other is a group of coaches and entrepreneurs. We can often do more than we ever thought possible when we connect with peers and mentors to help us along!
